Chow: 88mm Heavy Rainfall Cause Flash Flood In Penang



GEORGE TOWN, Nov 30 – The flash floods was caused in Sg Tiram, Relau, Teluk Kumbar, Bandar Baru Bayan,Kg Seronok Aiport dan Batu Maung areas yesterday with the heavy rainfall between 88mm while the drainage system also can not accommodate the water capacity of the heavy rain, said chairman of the Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Penang Chow Kon Yeow in a statement here today.

“DID pump house in Teluk Kumbar existing unable to accommodate heavy rainfall and abundant water. A lot of waste is also a source of water can not flow properly. In the meantime, Batu Maung also caused mud flows from the development of the Company Sunway causing mudslides while JKR road also ditches clogged with sand,” he said.

“For Teluk Kumbar, DID will carry out work clear the rubbish and obstacles in the pump house of Teluk Kumbar and adding staff to monitor the situation around the pump so that the pump housing is always in good condition. On other hand, the DID will soon make referrals to the developer (SUNWAY) on Batu Maung to implement the re-dredging the moat that was blocked,” he said.

In additional, Chow also added that the Flood Mitigation Project for Upgrading the Drainage Area at Sungai Nipah, Sungai Teluk Kumbar and Furnace Creek has been approved by the State with a cost of RM 7.5 million and the detailed design work is in progress now.

Heavy rain started at 7.30pm and lasted until 10pm yesterday night had caused some areas of the country were flooded. The affected areas is Sg Tiram, Relau, Teluk Kumbar, Bandar Baru Bayan,Kg Seronok Aiport dan Batu Maung. The road that also involved in the flood is Jalan Mahsuri , Jalan Tengah dan Jalan Azlan Shah. Heavy rains had causes 44 people in 12 family at Kg sulup, Kg Paya, Kg Masjid dan Kg Seronok to move out from their house.
