GEORGE TOWN, Nov 30 – PKR Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin urges DAP-led Penang State Government to immediately implement Southwest District Flood Mitigation Masterplan. He said he had received many complaints about wide spread flash floods that occurred in many parts of Southwestern District of Penang on last night.
“The areas that were affected included Teluk Kumbar, Bayan Lepas, Batu Maung – Taman Iping, Penang International Airport, Bayan Baru, Bukit Jambul and Pesta Pulau Pinang in Sungai Dua. After checking with officers from MBPP, initial reports showed that causes were heavy rain of 80mm poured into DBD within short period of time had contributed to the flash floods, coupled with sand and mud chocking existing drainage system,” he said
He said there was no doubt development is booming in the southwestern district but nothing has been done about the old drainage system built in the 70’s which it had already 40 years. In fact the Southwest District Flood Mitigation Masterplan has been completed since 2012. Although state government has started 1 or 2 projects, it is piecemeal compared to massive developments within the area.
“I call upon State Government to embark full and thorough investigation and immediately after that implement DBD Flood Mitigation projects in a big way. Developers from Southwest district has been contributing to flood mitigation funds. Residents also pay their quit rent diligently,” Sim said
“It is only fair to start using these drainage contribution funds to upgrade drainage infrastructures within DBD area. I am sure that the state government has seen the suffering of DBD residents last night. I will also take residents’ complaints and feedbacks to the relevant state authorities. I am confident the state government will do something very soon,” he added.
