KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16 – The plan to place at least one professional counselor in every school to assist students facing depression is being considered by the Education Ministry. The ministry was eyeing counselors with the comprehensive counseling skills, its deputy minister P. Kamalanathan told media here Tuesday.
The plan comes following the death of a student who committed suicide after allegedly being unable to answer questions in a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination paper last month. It was reported the 17-year-old boy hanged himself at the family home here after allegedly having difficulty in handling the Additional Mathematics paper. On another matter, Kamalanathan said the current school syllabus was comprehensive enough to educate students against the so-called IS militant group or Daesh terrorist ideology.
