PETALING JAYA, Dec 19 – Safiq Rahim said he will look forward to help Malaysia to qualify for the Asian Cup, or help the national team reach its best position (in the world) before he finish his career as a footballer. The Harimau Malaya captain said this after he was crowned as the most valuable player, and best midfielder at the 2015 National Football Awards ceremony held at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre here, yesterday night.
Safiq, 28, who is also captain of the Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) football club, admitted he had achieved much success as a footballer with his team and the national squad, but had never had the opportunity to play in the Asian Cup finals. In the meantime, the Kuala Sealngor native announced his decision to extend his contract with JDT until 2019 as he was happy with the management, which always took care of the interests of its players and the family spirit which existed in the team.
On winning the two awards, Safiq said it would serve as an encouragement to achieve even more success with JDT next season. Meanwhile, Kedah midfielder Baddrol Bakhtiar who was nominated for the best midfielder category, aimed to help the ‘Red Eagles’ emerge as one of the top-five teams in the Super League next year.
