KUCHING, Dec 24 – The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) has listed more controlled items under the Christmas Festive Season Price Control Scheme 2015, from Dec 23 until Dec 27. The items are chicken wings, pork (belly), pork (meat and fat) and live pigs (farm level control only) and only involves the needs of the population in Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan, especially for those who celebrate Christmas.
KPDNKK deputy minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said the increase in the number of items was due to high demand from local communities and was deemed as essential for the Christmas festivities. Speaking to reporters after launching the national-level Christmas Festive Season Price Control Scheme here on Wednesday, he said the local boned-mutton was dropped from the list in Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan, as it was not in high demand during the festival.
The 16 controlled items comprise chicken, chicken eggs, vegetables, mutton and pork, and is implemented under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. Ahmad Bashah said traders should not sell the items above the ceiling price set by the government and were required to differentiate the controlled items by placing pink price tags on them.
“More than 23,000 officers from the ministry would be conducting checks at public markets, morning markets and supermarkets. It is an ongoing measure to protect consumers from excessive profit taking by traders who are not ethical during the festive season,” he said.
Meanwhile, in SABAH, State Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayib said 13 items in the state had been listed in the festive price control scheme, and the addition of chicken wings, live pigs, pork (belly) and pork (meat and fat) was added due to high local demand during the festive season.
In the meantime, among the other items listed under the price control scheme were live chicken, standard chicken, super chicken, imported boned-lamb meat, imported boned-lamb thighs, chicken eggs of grade A,B,C, tomatoes, green capsicum, and beef (meat and fat).
