KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 – The Dewan Negara is having a one-day special sitting Thursday to debate a motion on Malaysia’s participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA). The motion was tabled by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed before Dewan Negara President Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang.

At a two-day sitting that ended yesterday, the Dewan Rakyat approved a motion backing Malaysia’s participation in the world’s biggest trade pact. If the motion is approved by the Dewan Negara, Malaysia is expected to sign the agreement on Feb 4 in New Zealand.

Besides Malaysia, 11 other countries in the partnership are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam and the United States. In the meantime, all the countries also concluded the TPPA negotiations on Oct 5 last year.
