GEORGE TOWN, Feb 12 – An early morning fire razed 38 motorcycles and three cars in the parking lot of Block B, Taman Jelutong Flats here. Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Senior Supt II Zulkifli Ramli said the station received an emergency call at 6.22 am and the first engine from the station arrived at the location about two minutes later.
“When firemen reached the scene, some of the 38 motorcycles parked under a block of flats were already on fire. The fire also gutted a store and three cars near the motorcycle parking lane. 14 firemen and two fire engines were involved in the operation which brought the flames under control at 6.50 am and the fire was finally extinguished six minutes later,” he said here today.
Zulkifli said all 38 motorcycles were destroyed while the three cars had 10 per cent burns. He said the cause of fire and total amount of losses were still being investigated. Meanwhile, an owner of one of the burnt motorcycles, Azelan Mohd Jamal, 32, said he was preparing to go to work in Bayan Lepas when he heard someone shouting “Api” (fire).
He said he live on the second floor, while he dashed down only to see the fire spreading to the motorcycle park, and he had tried to remove his motorcycle but failed. Therefore, he hoped that police would investigate the fire as it affected many vehicles of residents there.
