ALOR SETAR, Feb 21 – The new Kedah state executive council line-up scheduled to be sworn in on Monday is seen will put an end to the state UMNO leadership crisis. After Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah was sworn in as the new menteri besar of Kedah on Feb 4, taking over from Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, the focus now is the new line-up.
Many political analysts described that the appointment of the state executive council line-up as important for Ahmad Bashah’s leadership direction. A source close to the state government told Bernama that Ahmad Bashah was likely to retain the existing nine state executive councillors.
The source said a reshuffle may not be happening and in accordance with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s request. Before this, the state executive councillors had pledged to continue supporting the menteri besar even if their positions were not retained.
Meanwhile, Universiti Utara Malaysia Institute for Malaysian Political Analysis (Mapan) director Dr Kamarul Zaman Yusoff said Ahmad Bashah needed to mix the current state exco line-up with some new faces. He said if we want Kedah UMNO to be stable, Ahmad Bashah must keep some old faces and introduce new ones.
The swearing-in ceremony will take place before Kedah Council Regency chairman Tan Sri Tunku Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah at Istana Anak Bukit. Ahmad Bashah who declined to reveal the line-up when approached by reporters on Friday said the Kedah Regency Council had consented to the proposed line-up.
