KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 – The Dewan Rakyat was told Wednesday that the Penang state government failed to follow specifications set by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) in building affordable homes (RMM). Urban Well-being, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said the CIDB had set a minimum specification of three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
“But the Penang government allowed the developer to build the homes at a minimum specification of three bedrooms and one bathroom. The three bedroom-one bathroom unit only has a floor area of 900 sq ft and sold by the Penang government for RM400,000 each,” he replied, to a question from Datuk Mohd Zaim Abu Hasan (BN-Parit).
Comparably, Abdul Rahman pointed out, a 1Malaysia Civil Servants Housing (PPA1M) unit has a floor area of 1,500 sq ft and sold at RM300,000; a 1Malaysia Housing Project (PR1MA) has a floor area of 1,200 sq ft and sold at RM400,000. Meanwhile, he dismissed as a lie, the claim that it was the federal government that had set the RM400,000 per unit price tag on RMM in Penang.
“I take this opportunity to correct the Bagan YB (Lim Guan Eng) and Batu Kawan YB (P. Kasthuriraani) who yesterday said the RM400,000 price tag was set by the federal governmment, which is a lie. The maximum price for housing units in Penang is fixed by the state government and not the federal government,” he said.
“It is the decision of the Penang state government. I do not want the people to accuse the federal government when in fact, the RM400,000 price was set by the state government. The National Housing Council did not make any decision at its last meeting to harmonise the price of RMM. Penang said RM400,000 but we never agreed. We said go back and discuss with all the states and we will bring it to the next meeting,” he said.
