KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 – National mixed doubles pair Goh Liu Ying/Chan Peng Soon claimed their first title of the year by emerging champions in the 2016 New Zealand Open Grand Prix Gold Badminton tournament, today.
The 2010 Asian Championship gold medal winning pair edged Zheng Siwei/Li Yinhui of China in straight sets 21-19, 22-20 in a closely fought encounter that lasted 45 minutes, according to the tournament’s official website, www.nzbadmintonopen.com.
The title was a major boost to the confidence of the pair who are pursuing their dreams of qualifying for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August, after disappointing the first round exits at the German Open and All-England last month.
“This is an Olympic year and it gives us great confidence for our next tournament but especially Rio. We did not have much preparation for this tournament but we analysed our opponents and tried our best to not give away easy points.
“I made some simple mistakes but luckily we did not pay for that. They had an advantage because of their youth and speed so we had to use our experience to triumph,” Liu Ying was quoted as saying after the match.
The pair are also expected to take part in the India Open from March 29 to April 3 and Malaysian Open from April 5 to 10.
