PASIR PUTEH, March 27 – The Fire and Rescue Department received 11,837 fire-related calls from Jan 1 till yesterday, as compared to 11,296 calls during the corresponding period last year. Its director-general Datuk Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim said calls on bush fires numbered the highest at 8,363 followed by forest fires (1,766), dumpsites (1,070), farms and estates (638).
He said Kedah recorded the highest number of calls on forest fires at 1,600 due to the El Nino phenomenon which is very acute in the north of the peninsula. He was speaking to reporters after attending a key handing over ceremony to single mother Zaira Zakaria, 39, who is the recipient of a new home after her house was destroyed in a fire in Kampung Lepah, Selising, here Sunday. Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub officiated the function. Also present was Selising assemblyman Zulkifli Ali.
