SEPANG, March 28 – Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom arrived here today to begin a two-day official visit to Malaysia. Abdulla Yameen, who was accompanied by his wife Fathimath Ibrahim, was greeted upon arrival at the KL International Airport by Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, who is the minister-in-attendance.
Also present was Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Reezal Merican Naina Merican. A Wisma Putra statement said Abdulla Yameen’s visit was upon the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. This is Abdulla Yameen’s maiden visit to Malaysia since becoming president in November 2013.
Abdulla Yameen and Fathimath are scheduled to meet and dine with the Maldivian community in Kuala Lumpur tonight. Tomorrow, they will be accorded an official welcome and Abdulla Yameen will have a bilateral meeting with Najib in Putrajaya. Najib and Abdulla Yameen are expected to review the existing bilateral relations and cooperation as well as identify future collaboration in potential areas, the statement said.
Najib and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, are scheduled to host an official lunch tomorrow in honour of Abdulla Yameen and Fathimath at Seri Perdana. Malaysia and Maldives enjoy warm and wide-ranging substantive relations in various fields, including education, tourism and technical assistance which have brought mutual benefits to both countries. Abdulla Yameen and his delegation will leave for Singapore tomorrow evening.
