KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 – Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) programmes must be creative in order to remain relevant and become the choice broadcasting station of the people. Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said RTM, which recently celebrated its 70th anniversary on April 1, must take into account the aspirations and taste of the audience in Malaysia.
“RTM must churn out programmes that do not deviate from the tastes of the people. There are many ways of disseminating information, but what is important is that RTM will continue to be the choice of the people,” he said at the Special Gathering to Celebrate the 70th Anniversary of RTM and the Launching of RTM as the Olympics Official Broadcasting Station, here today.
Salleh said that since the day of its inception, RTM had undergone many changes including competition from various parties. He said the competition is normal and they should look at it from the positive perspective. Meanwhile, he also added that if they compete, they must endeavour together to improve the current situation, this is most important.
He said that the actual strength of RTM that could not be denied was the validity of the news and information disseminated besides not sensationalising any news. He said as the government mouthpiece, whatever news or information conveyed by RTM must surely undergo the verification process.
He said that the RTM only broadcasts facts, not rubbish. He added that any news that is speculative or sensational in nature has no place in RTM. Salleh added that the main challenge faced by the RTM was not only to convey information but also to make the people understand and accept the information conveyed.
“Our intention is for the people to understand and accept the aspiration of the government as a national aspiration to be shared by everyone. Whether through the radio, TV or other new media platforms. RTM must also be fast in broadcasting accurate information as well as being fast in correcting any inaccurate information,” he said.
