GEORGE TOWN, Apr 6 – Ministrer of Works, Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Yusof had flagged-off traffic as a symbol of the soft launch of the 3.2km elevated structure of the Bayan Lepas Expressway (BLE) which happen this morning. The construction of the RM337 million project, elevated structure of the BLE, is complete and it’s ready to received motorists after 2:00pm today.
The opening of the elevated structure is on schedule and it is expected to reduce vehicles congestion connecting between the Batu Maung and Sungai Nibong (Queensbay). The expressway was designed to accommodate initial traffic volume of 70,000 average daily traffic (ADT) per day at the level of the service (LOS) A, and LOS C ay At-grade highway. While the maximum capacity of the highway is expected to reach maximum traffic in year 2030 at LOS C on elevated and LOS E at At-Grade.
The BLE project, which UEM Builder is the main contractor, is divided into two major components. The first is the Elevated Structure that measure 3.2km and is a 4-lane dual carriageway. The structure comprises of a standard span and a special span measuring 3,161 metres and 390 metres in length.
The second component is at At-Grade which is 4.2km upgrading works of the 4-lane dual carriageway that is build on the same line. Along the route there are three intersections, which are Hilir Sg. Kluang 1, Lebuhraya Kg. Jawa and Jalan Kg. Jawa intersection.
The physical construction of the whole BLE is now 99 percent completed. The entire project, which commenced in April 2014, is to fully complete by June 2016. Between now and June 2016, several minor construction work such as bicycle bridge and landscaping will be undertaken at coastal side. The entire expressway is set to be equipped with LED street lighting, drainage, bicycle lane, bicycle bridge and road dividers.
