IGP: No Police Action Over Use Of Poppy Seeds In Cooking

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 – You can continue to use poppy seeds as a spice in cooking. The police will not arrest you. This assurance comes from Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar himself. He said poppy seeds are a spice long used in our cooking. He said it is taken only in small quantities and does not show up positive in urine.

He told this in a press conference at the Police Training Centre here today. Khalid said he agreed with Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam that using poppy seeds in small quantities did not impair health. These seeds are widely used in cooking in India and several countries in the Middle East and Europe. The issue of poppy seeds came up after it was found that cakes containing poppy seeds were being hold here.
