KUCHING, April 14 – The Election Commission has advised employers to give their employees time off work to vote in the Sarawak state election, polling for which is on May 7. EC chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the employers were bound by subsection 25(3) of the Election Offences Act 1954 to do so.
Employers can be fined up to RM5,000 or sentenced to a jail term of up to one year if they refused to allow their employees to exercise their right, he added. He said employers cannot penalise any employee by deducting his or her salary or allowance during the period that the employee has gone to vote,” he said.
He also said that voters could check the electoral rolls to find out about their polling centre and stream on the EC website at www.spr.gov.my. They can also send an SMS by typing SPR SEMAK Identity Card Number and sending to 15888 from April 22 onwards, or telephone the EC headquarters at Putrajaya (03-88927000) or the Sarawak office (082-254233 or 082-254867), he said. Mohd Hashim said a soft copy of the electoral rolls or CD will be on sale from April 22 and a hard copy, from April 23.
