LUNDU, April 16 – A total of RM640 million have been allocated for Sarawak under the 11th Malaysia Plan for flood mitigation projects to be carried out in stages, says Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar. He said these included the mitigation project at the Sungai Batang Kayan here which would cost about RM24 million.
He added that this will be carried out beginning this year until 2017. He said if the allocation is insufficient, they will request again in the first rolling plan. Wan Junaidi said this at a press conference after the launch of the Sungai Batang Kayan embankment project and ground-breaking ceremony for the Sungai Kampung Semunin Jaya erosion prevention project in Lundu near here yesterday.
Both events were launched by Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem. Wan Junaidi said the Sungai Semunin Jaya rehabilitation project would also be carried out in Lundu at a cost of RM500,000. He said the project which was due to be completed next year would help prevent river erosion and floods in Lundu town.
