IGP: Temple Desecrator Indeed A Mental Patient

KUCHING, April 29 – Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar on Friday confirmed that the man who desecrated idols at a temple in Ipoh was indeed a mental patient, contrary to the claim by Health deputy director-general Datuk Dr S. Jeyaindran. Khalid said the 29-year-old man had been under treatment at the KPJ Ipoh private hospital since 2013, and the police verified this with the hospital and three doctors there.

Dr Jeyaindran would have only referred to government hospital records, he told reporters after a meeting with police personnel in Batu Kawah near here. Khalid advised people who did not have accurate information to refrain from issuing statements that could aggravate the situation and have people accuse the police of favouring the man.

The man had used a machete to smash several idols at the Sree Muneeswarar Amman Temple in Jalan Hospital, Ipoh, last Sunday and then driven his car against traffic along Jalan Ghazali Jawi and crashed it onto a bus shelter. He was then arrested by the police, and sent to Hospital Bahagia in Tanjung Rambutan for a medical examination.
