BAGAN SERAI, April 29 – The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has urged the Perak government to implement water rationing to prevent rapid water depletion in the Bukit Merah Dam due to the hot spell caused by El Nino. A member of the SPAN Board of Directors, Prof Datuk Dr N. Marimuthu said once rationing is carried out, the supply of water in the dam can last 60 days instead of only 30 days.
“Rationing must be carried out twice a day so that the water supply in the state is not affected, as the Meteorological Department expects the warm weather currently sweeping the country to persist until September,” he told reporters after a working visit to the Bukit Merah Dam here, today.
He also advised consumers to use water prudently without wastage. Recently, State Public Utilities, Infrastructure, Energy and Water Committee chairman Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin said water in the Bukit Merah Dam could only last 30 days because the water level was fast depleting. Besides that, Marimuthu said, SPAN engineers were currently examining the position of some old dams in the country, including in Johor and Perak which were 100 years old.
