KUCHING, May 8 – Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak described Sarawak Barisan Nasional’s resounding victory in the 11th Sarawak election as an endorsement of the people’s trust in the leadership of Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem. The Prime Minister said the victory proved the strength of the partnership between the Federal and state governments in fulfilling the promises to the people.
“BN will live up to the expectations and aspirations of the Sarawak people. It will involve infrastructure, education, basic amnesties, security and other facilities under the jurisdiction of the Federal and state governments,” he told reporters at a press conference that was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Adenan, BN leaders and BN candidates who won in the Sarawak election.
The Prime Minister also attributed BN’s strong showing in rural and urban areas in Sarawak as an endorsement of a shift in trust by the people towards BN. He said the swing in urban votes to BN caused DAP five seats and saw a strong comeback by SUPP and other BN Sarawak component parties. He said they see the revival of SUPP and other component parties as a factor to strengthen the unity in the BN family.
“The opposition’s ploy to use the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as issues in campaigns had failed because the people of Sarawak are aware and accept the reason for the implementation of GST. The people of Sarawak know that the GST is used to develop the economy of the country. GST will bring about development in Sarawak, especially the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway,” he said.
Najib hinted that the landslide victory of the Sarawak BN would also serve as a momentum and signal for BN to continue working hard for the 14th General Election. The Prime Minister also said a cabinet reshuffle might be necessary if Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas decides to give up his post because there was already a vacancy for deputy minister in the same ministry after the demise of Datuk Noriah Kasnon in a helicopter tragedy on Thursday.
