Bersih’s Maria Chin Stopped From Leaving The Country To Oversea

PETALING JAYA, May 15 – Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah has been barred from leaving the country on Sunday night. She was stopped by airport officials when she tried to board a flight to South Korea this evening. Maria was at KL International Airport for her flight to South Korea to receive a human rights award.

“Breaking: BERSIH Chair, @mariachin just been barred from leaving the country. She suppose to receive Gwangju Award from Korea,” tweeted Bersih 2.0 official Twitter account @bersih2 on Sunday night. It said that no reason was given for barring her from leaving the country except that it was under “arahan Putrajaya.”

It was reported last month that the group won the award for its efforts in pushing for electoral reform in Malaysia. Therefore, Bersih 2.0 said back then it will be send representatives to receive the award on May 18 at the Memorial Foundation in South Korea.
