PM Launches World Oceans Week 2016 Celebrations

KUALA NERUS, May 23 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today launched the World Oceans Week (WOW) 2016 programme at the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). The programme by UMT is being held in conjunction with the World Oceans Day celebrations which is observed throughout the world on June 8 each year.

Najib who was accompanied by Terengganu Menteri Besar, Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman; Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, and UMT vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar also viewed an exhibition in conjunction with the celebrations before leaving for the Duyong Marina Resort for a meeting with Terengganu Barisan Nasional leaders.

Earlier, on his one-day working visit to Terengganu on Monday, the Prime Minister officiated the second Ijtimak Pondok programme in UMT before launching WOW 2016. A total of 24 programmes had been planned as part of WOW 2016 from May 12 until June 8 to create awareness among the public of the importance of the ocean to mankind.

This includes the WOW UMT 2016 exhibition with participation by Alam Sekitar Malaysia Sdn Bhd (ASMA), the National Oceanography Directorate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS) in UMT as well as other research institutes in UMT.

At the exhibition, the Prime Minister was shown the “wave glider” equipment which could be used for the collection of ocean physical data such as waves, currents and temperature for research purposes. The ‘Wave Glider’ is a joint project of INOS UMT and ASMA, with UMT being the first university in Malaysia to apply it using satellite technology.
