KANGAR, May 24 – The northern states of Perlis and Kedah suffered severe drought due the El Nino phenomenon from February till early this month. But now the situation has changed with the two states facing heavy downpours and squalls much to the chagrin of the people.
Squalls followed by heavy rain and thunderstorms that lasted almost three hours this afternoon left a trail of destruction in the tiny state of Perlis, with more than 10 houses, a hospital and schools suffering damage. Perlis Civil Defence Department spokesman Mohd Rizuan Abd Gani said trees were uprooted and roof tiles blown away. He said, in the first five minutes after the storm hit at 1.30pm, they received 20 calls and by the time it was over at 4.30pm, yhey had received 74 calls.
