GEORGE TOWN, May 31 – Transport Minister Dr Liow Tiong Lai said Federal Government to be upgraded the Padang Besar railway station to boost more container shipments in the future at Penang. He said the expansion is aimed at improving the Thai-Malaysian container business, and ensuring ports such as Penang Port can thrive from the growth. Therefore, he also said that this will also to be ensure that the last mile connectivity to ports in Butterworth and Penang island.
He said this in a press conference at the Penang Port Commission offices at Swettenham Pier here on Monday. However, he did not indicate how much would be spent on the upgrades or when it would start. He just said all the upgrades will be revealed soon after the plans were finalised.
“The container business at the recently privatised Penang Port Sdn Bhd had seen strong growth in the sector. In 2014, Penang Port received 1.2mil TEUs and in 2015, it went up to 1.31mil. For this year, Penang Port was targeting an 8% to 10% growth which is aiming 1.4 to 1.45mil TEUs in the container sector. It has shown steady growth and I am sure that it will be a double digit growth for the port is possible,” Liow added.
