MIRI, Jun 17 – The first election petition after the May 7 Sarawak state election was filed today by Barisan Nasional direct candidate Datuk Hii King Chiong to challenge the result of the Pujut seat. Hii’s lawyer Peter Lin Kuan Yuh said the election petition was filed at the Miri High Court registry on the grounds that the victory of Dr Ting Tiong Choon of the DAP was invalid as he is a citizen of another country.

He said the election petition was filed based on sections 16 and 17(g) of the Sarawak constitution pertaining to citizenship. For the record, under sections 16 and 17(g), a State Legislative Assembly member is disqualified if he has voluntarily acquired the citizenship of another country.  In the May 7 election, Dr Ting won with a majority of 1,759 votes in a four-cornered contest involving DAP, BN, PAS and an Independent candidate. — Bernama
