BUKIT MERTAJAM, Jun 18 – Police busted an illegal football betting syndicate after detaining a suspect at a restaurant in Taman Selamat, here on Thursday. Seberang Prai Tengah police chief ACP Rusli Mohd Noor said a police team monitoring illegal football betting activities in view of the ongoing Euro 2016 acted based on a tip off and surveillance. The team nabbed the suspect at a restaurant.
He said during the 11.50pm raid, police detained a 43-year-old man. He said the suspect had a hand phone, RM950 cash, a pager, a newspaper which had the schedule of matches (Euro 2016) with him. The suspect was detained to assist investigations and his involvement in accepting bets for Euro 2016 matches.
Rusli said police have not ruled out the possibility that the suspect had links with illegal betting syndicates. He said police believe the suspect accepted bets via telephone. Betting on football matches is illegal in Malaysia and even those who place bets on gambling websites that are legal in other countries will face action. — Bernama
