GEORGE TOWN, Jun 25 – Penang State Government accepted the apology of Padang Serai PAS leader Shaharuddin Ibrahim over his “if DAP ruled, azan will be banned” remark made during a sermon at a mosque recently. State Islamic Religious Affairs Committee Chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said this was because in the spirit of Ramadan, it was a good time to forgive each other and let bygones be bygones.
“Shaharuddin have come forward to make an apology to the state government and DAP (published in the Sinar Harian newspaper dated June 21, 2016). And today, the State Government has accept his apology, “he told reporters at a press conference in Komtar, here, Friday afternoon.
“In Islam, slander is a serious matter because defamation is worse than killing. Ihope that the other parties including PAS, do not publish the defamatory statements like this, because it is worse than killing. If you want information about Penang, you can contact the State Government or any ground including JKKK (Development Committee and Community Safety) and so on, he said.
Shaharuddin was alleged to have said: “Kalau DAP menguasai negara…nuu Pulau Pinang tuan-tuan, bang (azan) dah tak boleh dah, bang (azan) tak boleh dah, tuan tuan!” during a sermon at Masjid An-Najah, Padang Serai, Kedah. (If DAP controls the country, let alone Penang, gentlemen, the sounding of the call for prayer will not be possible, gentlemen.) Yesterday, Shaharuddin told Sinar Harian that he was sorry for making the remark. He was quoted as saying that he do not want to prolong the issue and would like to humbly say he is sorry, especially to the DAP.
