JOHOR BARU, Jun 25 – Umno veteran and Johor Bahru MP Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad said the sacking of “2M” (former Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir) happened as a result of infighting among elite politicians.
Speaking to the media after handing out Ramadan goodies to 3,343 orphans, single mothers and disable groups from the Johor Bahru parliamentary constituency at the Kampung Datuk Sulaiman Menteri community hall here, today, Shahrir referring to the duo as 2M said the while both were elite politicians, their sacking from the party is insignificant.
The Barisan Nasional Backbenchers’ Club (BBC) chairman said the impact is insignificant. He said, however the damage to the unity of Johor Umno is done but all of this is in the past. Shahrir said that the 2M should have showed their loyalty to Umno during the last two by-elections.
He added that it is ok if they do not like the leader, but they must love the party. Shahrir who also announced that he would not take part as a candidate in the next general election, urged Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to set up new party since the latter claimed that the Citizens’ Declaration had gained 1.2 million signatures.
He added that as the nation’s politics is confined in nature to each locality, all Umno grassroots leaders need to work harder for the local community in order to win people’s hearts. Muhyiddin who was the Pagoh Umno division chief, will see him replaced by his deputy Ismail Mohamed who will take over as acting division chief as announced by the Johor Umno Liaison Committee secretary, Datuk Md Jais Sarday on Friday.
Ismail Mohamed is also the state Agriculture and Agro-based Industry committee chairman. Meanwhile, Johor Umno chief and Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that the state division have accepted the decision of the Umno Supreme Council.
