LARUT, Jul 3 – Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) does not consider the use of price tags on goods displaying the one-sen coins as an offence, however the matter would be discussed again with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).

Its minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin said this was because there was no law that prohibited the use of the one-sen coins in the price of goods. He said the issue of one sen coins which are now no longer used, is a policy made by BNM, and it has nothing to do with KPDNKK.

“However, as there have been many complaints from consumers, especially at the supermarkets, I have instructed my officers to renegotiate with BNM regarding the issue of the one sen coin,” he told reporters after a Tadarus al-Quran programme at Masjid al-Karauwi in Batu Kurau near here, today.

A total of 600 women participated in the program which was held from 8am to 1pm. He was commenting on the report in a local newspaper that KPDNKK and BNM were still deadlocked in resolving the issue of having price tags involving the values requiring the use of one sen coins, to be either rounded up or down to the nearest multiple of five sen.

Hamzah, who is also Larut MP said the individual sen values were also calculated in the goods and services tax (GST). According to him, the issue arose because customers could not accept the use of the one-sen coins on price tags of items in stores. He said, however, he will discuss with BNM to resolve this issue, and he cannot announce anything until the talks are held.

Meanwhile, Hamzah said he had asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry to ensure a sufficient supply of tomatoes during the Hari Raya festive period. He said this was done following complaints that there was insufficient supply of tomatoes in the market as wholesalers were selling them abroad. Hamzah said however, the supply of other essential items including chicken and beef, were sufficient. — Bernama
