GEORGE TOWN, Jul 7 – Penang celebrates George Town as a UNESCO World Heritage site which is unique architectural and cultural townscape is unparalleled anywhere in East and Southeast Asia, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng. He said the episode this year will take place on various venues around George Town World Heritage Site from the 7th to the 9th of July. The showpiece for this year is the StreetFest on the 9th of July.
Today marks as the 8th anniversary of George Town’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The theme for this year’s George Town Heritage Celebrations is ‘MAI MAIN’, it was featuring a dynamic line-up of traditional sports and games from the multicultural community of George Town, with the heritage enclave as the backdrop.
This celebration of diversity is the basis of the basis of George Town Heritage Celebrations with showcasing their own cultural practices and performances, food and craft from traditional dances and martial arts demonstrations, to exhibitions and street performances.
This event was organised by George Town World Heritage Incorporated with the support and participation of City Council of Penang Island, Penang Global Tourism, Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO, George Town Festival and 20 various local communities, this annual affair in the month of July is no stranger to all of Rakyat.
As 8th of July is a replacement holiday for Heritage Day on 7th of July which also falls on the 2nd day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Saturday the 9th is the birthday of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang – a long weekend holiday for all people, and George Town Heritage Celebrations 2016 is set to present a line-up of activities which will keep everyone both entertained and educated.
