Attempt To Wrench ATM Machine, Botched As Suspect Panics And Flees

SHAH ALAM, Jul 8 – A man who used a Mercedes Benz car in an attempt to wrench an automated teller machine (ATM) from a food court here on Wednesday, panicked and fled the scene when the security alarm was triggered. In the incident about 5.30am, the ATM at the Section 2 Food Court was intact as the man who wore a ski-mask, hurriedly drove away.

Initial police investigations revealed the outer sheet of the ATM was damaged. Shah Alam police chief, ACP Shafien Mamat said the would-be thief had earlier, tied one end of a rope to the ATM machine and the other to the Mercedes Benz parked outside the food court.

“The presence of a crowd at a fast-food restaurant near the food court might have hampered the efforts of the man to drag out the ATM machine, and when the alarm went off, he took to his heels. The police were examining the closed-circuit television camera to track down the suspect, who was believed to be in his 30s,” he told reporters after attending a Hari Raya Aidilfitri feast at the Selangor police contingent headquarters here today. — Bernama
