KUALA LUMPUR, Jul 13 – A nasi lemak seller will be spending one month behind bars from today for stealing a Myanmar woman’s handbag at a Baptist church here. Magistrate Nur A’minahtul Mardiah Md Nor meted out the sentence to Cheong Chee Kheong, 45, after he admitted stealing a handbag belonging to Naw Aye Phaw at the KL Baptist Church in Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang at 1.30pm on July 10.

According to the facts of the case presented by DPP Fadhly Mohd Zamry, the woman, a cleaner at the Myanmar Embassy was inside the church when Cheong suddenly snatched her handbag and fled. However, Cheong did not get very far as other church members managed to nab him. Counsel Cyrus Tiu told the court in mitigation that “the accused had to support his ailing father”. — Bernama
