Zahid: BN, Umno Not Worried By Tun M’s New Party

ULAANBAATAR, Jul 16 – Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno are getting stronger with continuous support from the people and prepared to face any new party or opposition pact, said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said he had instructed all component parties of the BN to close ranks and face whatever challenges that come, whether from the existing opposition parties or a new one.

“We want BN to continue to be solid, win and form the government after the 14th general election,” he told Malaysian journalists here today in response to an announcement on the formation of a new party by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad last Thursday.

Ahmad Zahid is here to attend the 11th Asia-Europe Meeting (Asem). Zahid said BN’s victory in the Sarawak state election, and also the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar parliamentary by-elections recently showed that the coalition still garnered the support of the people.

Not denying that the opposition also had its influence, Zahid said he left it to the people to evaluate the track record of BN. He added that as a democratic country, they cannot prevent any group or individual to form a new party, take over or change a party’s name.

Last Thursday, Dr Mahathir announced that he was setting up a new political party and that it would join the opposition in facing the 14th General Election. To a question whether BN and Umno felt threatened with the setting up of the new party by Dr Mahathir, Zahid said they would use the same tactic used by Dr Mahathir to fight the political enemies when he was in the government to counter it. — Bernama
