GEORGE TOWN, Jul 18 – A heavy rain and strong winds hits Penang island today, causing the Penang International Airport to be flooded. Flights to and from the Penang International Airport have been delayed due to heavy rain and flooding, authorities say.

Airport Senior General Manager Arif Jaafar said no less than 14 flights were delayed. He said landings by 10 flights were on hold and four departing flights were also delayed due to heavy rain and strong winds. Besides that, he said the flooding also occurred at public area of the arrival hall, the pick-up driveway as well as the waiting lounge for turboprop aircraft.

“In the meantime, there have also been reports of traffic jams due to water overflow at the roundabout approaching the airport terminal. The heavy rainfall from 3pm to 5pm had resulted in a high volume of water, measuring about 209mm. Waters subsided about 6pm and airport workers were draining floodwaters out of the terminal,” he said.
