ALOR STAR, Jul 26 – A Thai masseuse was sentenced to death by hanging by the High Court here today after she was found guilty of trafficking in drug into the country two years ago. Judicial Commissioner Dr Choo Ka Sing handed down the sentence on Sarawannee Pisitsakunwong after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution case.
The woman, from Bangkok, Thailand, was charged with trafficking in 1164.5gm of Methamphetamine at the Bus Passenger/Pedestrian Check-point Unit, Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration Complex at 3.40pm on April 28, 2014. Sarawannee, a single mother with two children, was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
She had been working as a masseuse in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, since 2011. In the judgment, Choo said the testimony by the defence was a mere denial and not sufficient to raise reasonable doubt. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor from the Customs Department, Mohd Izhanudin Alias, while Sarawannee was represented by lawyer D.Ai Cha Ran. — Bernama
