10-Hour Water Supply Interruption In Southern Penang From Saturday Night Till Sunday Morning

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 15 – There will be 10-hour water supply interruption in southern of Penang Island, in areas from Sungai Tiram to Gertak Sanggul, from 10.00pm till 8.00am this weekend. Pipe connection works will be carried out at 4 locations at Lebuh Sungai Ara 1, Jalan Bayan Lepas and Jalan Permatang Damar Laut.

In a statement today, Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang Sdn Bhd (PBAPP) said the work scope encompasses a 900mm x 900mm connection at Lebuh Sungai Ara 1, to improve water supply and meet the future water demand in Bayan Lepas, Teluk Kumbar, Gertak Sanggul and Balik Pulau.

It said it will also involve three 600mm connections to accommodate Public Works Department (JKR) road upgrading and widening projects at Jalan Bayan Lepas and Jalan Permatang Damar Laut. It also pointed out that the Penang International Airport services and Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone areas will not be affected.

“We will coordinate with the airport authorities to ensure that the airport’s reservoirs are sufficiently filled up before work commences. Water supply to the Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone areas will also NOT be affected. When completed, these works will benefit about 30,000 registered water consumers,” said PBAPP.

In the meantime, the works at all four locations have been scheduled on an overnight basis, during a weekend, to minimise the potential economic impact and avoid peak water demand periods. It said with these connections in place, PBAPP will be in a better position to address projected future water demand and minimise the risks of water shortages or rationing during future dry seasons.

PBAPP hereby advises all households of four locations in these affected areas to kindly store sufficient water for overnight use during the interruption period. It also said that these waterworks are necessary and will help to ensure continuous good water supply on Penang Island in the future.
