HONG KONG, Oct 7 – Malaysia are back in the World Cup of Golf for the first time since 2001 with Danny Chia and Nicholas Fung earning a late entry into the prestigious team event. The $8 million (RM33 million) tournament, which features two-man teams representing 28 countries, takes place in Melbourne from Nov 24-27.

The withdrawal of Fiji’s former major winner Vijay Singh means that Chia received the nod as the next highest-ranked golfer in the world and he picked Fung as his partner. Chia, a two-time Asian Tour champion, will be making his third World Cup of Golf appearance. The 26-year-old Fung will be making his debut.

The 43-year-old Chia said he delighted to get into the World Cup of Golf. In the meantime, he also said that it had been a while since Malaysia last qualified and coming so soon after he played in the Olympic Games, this is fantastic news for him and Nicholas.

Australia’s team of world No.1 Jason Day and Adam Scott will start as hot favourites at home for the 2016 strokeplay team tournament, which will see foursomes (alternate shot) on first and third days and fourball (best ball) play on the second and final days at Kingston Heath Golf Club. — AFP
