Zahid: Expect More Arrests During Bersih Rally

BAGAN DATOH, Nov 19 – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said police are expected to arrest more Bersih 5 and Red Shirts leaders and those associated with the two groups as the rally progresses today. Declining to reveal the full list of those expected to be detained, Ahmad Zahid who is also Home Minister said he had left the matter to the discretion of the Inspector-General of Police.

“If we find any of them has broken the law, not only will they be arrested but they will be charged in court,” Ahmad Zahid told reporters here. Despite the arrests of Bersih 2.0 chair Maria Chin Abdullah and secretariat manager Mandeep Singh, yesterday and Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos early this morning, the Bersih 5 rally kicked off at Kuala Lumpur as planned.

He also stressed that the arrests of the leaders should not be interpreted as an “abuse of power” as claimed by some netizens. “How is this an abuse of power? We did not only arrest the leaders of one rally. Many of the Red Shirts have also been hauled up and there will be more arrests as the rally proceeds,” he added.
