PETALING JAYA, Nov 25 – Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli today has resigned as PKR secretary-general following uncertainty over his conviction on two charges under Official Secrets Act (OSA) and will be replaced by Datuk Saifuddin Nasution. Party president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Ismail announced at PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today that former secretary general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution will take over Rafizi’s duty effective tomorrow.
The Sessions Court, on Nov 14, sentenced Rafizi for 18 months in jail over two charges of leaking a classified 1MDB audit report. He said in a statement today that even though the case is still on appeal at the High Court, he will be disqualified to contest in elections and to hold party posts if it proved unsuccessful.
However, Rafizi said that he will continue to serve as party vice-president until the law decides otherwise. Rafizi became PKR secretary-general in October following a long drawn out party elections, succeeding Saifuddin himself. Saifuddin had contested for deputy presidency and lost the battle to current Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.
