GEORGE TOWN, Jan 5 – The D-Day to decide the winner of FIFA’s prestigious Puskas Award is around the corner and Malaysians have till Jan 9 to vote for our own Mohd Faiz Subri. The results will be announced at a glittering ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland. Mohd Faiz is up against Venezuela’s Daniuska Rodríguez and Brazilian Marlone. Speaking to theSun recently, Faiz said being nominated for the award had not changed his life much.

“I have no problem (being in the media spotlight) but what’s important is for me to divide my time well between family and my career and focus on my training,” he told theSun during a training session with the Penang Super League team at Penang Sports Club.

“Bbeing nominated in the top three of the prestigious award also did not affect his training but in fact has made him want to do better for the new season. Win or not, I will give my best for the team and for the Penang football fan,” he said. The 29-year-old striker also conveyed his thanks to the media, especially theSun, for promoting him and asking the public to vote for him.

Mohd Faiz is the first Malaysian to be nominated for the award and is now on the verge of becoming the first Asian player to win it. The award is named after Ferenc Puskas, captain of the famed Hungarian team of the early 1950s which was also known as the “Magical Magyars”.

Puskas, who went on to play for Spanish giants Real Madrid in the 1950s and 60s, is widely considered as one of the most prolific strikers the game has ever seen with 512 goals in 528 games. Past winners of the award include Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Colombia’s James Rodriguez. The award is for the best goal scored between Sept 30, 2015 and Sept 30, 2016.
