Waterspout, Flash Floods Hit Penang

GEORGE TOWN, Mar 28 – After an hour of downpour this evening, several low-lying areas in the island and mainland were hit by flash floods while motorists who using the Penang Bridge also reported seeing a waterspout which occurred about 6:00pm today. Heavy traffic was also observed along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway heading to Weld Quay.

Over at Lebuh Queen, Jalan Sungai Pinang, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Haji Hashim Iman, Jalan Anson and Jalan Logan in Penang were in knee-deep water. Traffic came to a standstill near Jalan Anson for about half an hour at the junction near Jalan Macalister.  There was also a traffic snarl at the intersection of Jalan Perak and Jalan P. Ramlee.

On the mainland, areas in Seberang Jaya were covered in water and rivers swelled.  The highway section at KM2.7 of the Butterworth Outer Ring Road was flooded and not passable to vehicles.  It is believed that the rubbish-chocked drains in these areas further aggravated the situation. While the rain stopped at around 8pm, the flood waters only started to recede about half an hour later.
