KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 29 – The High Court here has fixed four day from Oct 13 to hear the defamation suit filed by activist Maria Chin Abdullah against Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunus over for allegedly linking Bersih 2.0 with Daesh militant group. 

Maria’s counsel Melissa Sasidaran told reporters that Judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab set the date in his chambers today in the presence of Jamal’s counsel Mohammed Nasser Yusof and herself.  She said the court also set May 22 for case management. 

Maria, 60, who is the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) Steering Committee chairman, filed the suit against Jamal, who is the chairman of the Malay Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) Coalition and the Gerakan Merah Malaysia (GMM), on Oct 7 last year. 

In her statement of claims, Maria claimed that the Jamal had uttered defamatory remarks against her during a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre on Sept 28 last year , which were then published by multiple news portals, as well as the mainstream print and electronic media. 

She also claimed that on Oct 4 the same year, Jamal uttered another defamatory remarks against her in front of the Bukit Aman Police headquarters which were also published by the media and news portals the following day. Maria is seeking general, aggravated and exemplary damages and an injunction order to prevent the defendant from repeating or republishing the defamatory remarks. — Bernama
