KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 2 – The driver of the trailer that was involved in an accident on the North South Expressway near the Tanjung Malim Toll Plaza, which killed a family of six, has been detained. Hulu Selangor District Police chief, Supt R. Supramaniam said the 27-year-old driver was detained to facilitate investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“His urine test was negative. Blood samples to detect drugs and alcohol have been sent to the Chemistry Department,” he said in a statement here today adding that investigation revealed that the driver had eight traffic offences and one under Section 3(1) Drug Dependents (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 Amendment 1998.

In the 7.40am incident at Km 403.3, Lam Wai Loon, 46, his wife Wong Check Lee, 53, and their sons Lam Jie Yang, 19, and Lam Jie Yong, 13, as well as Wai Loon’s father, Lam Leong Choy, 76, and brother, Lam Wai Keat, 38, died at the scene. The driver of the earth-laden northbound lorry was said to have lost control of his vehicle, which skidded and ploughed into the Ssangyong MPV which was on the same lane. –Bernama
