GEORGE TOWN, Apr 9 – Project Ocean Awareness USM 2017 will be held from 10th April to 30th April 2017 at Padang Kawad – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and other various location. This was the fifth event which was organized by USM Scuba Diving Club.
The main purpose of this project is to increase public awareness about the importance of maintaining ocean and beach cleanliness in order to protect the ocean ecosystem which also helps to sustain our biosphere through fun learning ways. Activities such as charity run, talks and workshops, documentary screening, beach clean-up and many more are expected to be carried out from 10th April to 30th April 2017.
Project Ocean Awareness USM is a student movement initiated by the USM Scuba Diving Club in an effort to create wider ocean awareness. Initiated in late 2012 by a few passionate first year students from the School of Biological Sciences, the inaugural Ocean Awareness Week was successfully carried out from the 6th to 10th May 2013. The event received overwhelming response from both students and staff of USM.
Driven by the impact this project carried, the USM Scuba Diving Club organized another instalment of this event in the following year, titled Ocean Awareness Week 2014. In 2015, the annual event received a new name, ‘Project Ocean Awareness USM’ to bring uniformity to our movement.
Also, for the first time, under the Project Ocean Awareness umbrella, Ocean Awareness Outreach 2015 was organized and targeted not only the USM community but the public as well, including students from both primary and secondary schools across Penang.
