Khairy: BAM Gentleman Agreement Crisis Almost Over
PETALING JAYA, Apr 16 – The crisis of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in deciding on a presidential candidate at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on April 29 is almost resolved. Youth and Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin said a discussion with the two candidates, namely, BAM acting president, Tan Sri Mohamed Al Amin Abd Majid and deputy, Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria had shown a positive development.
He, however, declined to comment further on the matters discussed and regarded that the issue would be professionally solved. “Yes, I have met with the two individuals. I feel the settlement to the issue is very close. Let the discussion be just between the three of us,” he told reporters after taking part in a charity walk, “The Rock Walk 2017” at Evolve Concept Mall, Ara Damansara here, today.
The local media, prior to this, reported that the members of the BAM council had agreed to maintain the tradition of no contest involving the president’s post since 32 years ago. However, the BM council members did not decide on the presidential candidate but gave the mandate to Mohamed Al Amin and Mohamad Norza to find the best way to overcome the issue that rose between them.
The issue on the presidential election surfaced after the incumbent , Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff revealed a “gentlemen’s agreement” involving the top BAM leadership in which Mohamad Norza should take over the number one post of the parent body at the election this time. However, Mohamed Al Amin who denied involvement in the “gentlemen’s agreement” had also expressed his interest to become president. — Bernama
