GEORGE TOWN, May 13 – The flash floods was caused in Sungai Pinang, Jalan P Ramlee, Jalan Masjid Negeri, Jalan Scotland, Minden Height, Jalan Bagan Jermal, Lorong Perak dan Jalan Tan Sri The Ewe Lim areas today with the heavy rainfall between 50mm to 70mm while the drainage system also can not accommodate the water capacity of the heavy rain, said chairman of the Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Penang Chow Kon Yeow in a statement.

“Flash flood was caused by the heavy rainfall and the drainage system can’t accommodate the water capacity of the heavy rain in Sungai Air Itam, Sungai Pinang and Sungai Jelutong. Therefore, a lot of waste is also a source of water can not flow properly,” Chow said.

In additional, Chow said for the long-term solution, Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia (DID) Penang will carry out the Flood Mitigation Project for the Sungai Pinang Phase 2 to address flooding in the catchment area of Sungai Pinang which also involved Sungai Dondang. He also added that the Flood Mitigation Project for the Sungai Pinang Phase 2 involves a total allocation of RM150 million.

Heavy rain started at 11.30am and lasted until 1:00pm this afternoon had caused several areas of the state were flooded. The affected areas is Sungai Pinang, Jalan P Ramlee, Jalan Masjid Negeri, Jalan Scotland, Minden Height, Jalan Bagan Jermal, Lorong Perak dan Jalan Tan Sri The Ewe Lim. — PN
