JOHOR BARU, Aug 4 – The Johor state government aims to complete the construction of a total of 5,490 affordable housing units and offer them to buyers by the end of this year. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said this proves the state government is committed to achieving the target of building some 60,000 units of affordable housing by 2020.
“It is not limited to Iskandar Malaysia area, but will include all the districts in Johor,” he told a press conference in conjunction with the handover of keys and draw for Johor Affordable Housing Ownership (RMMJ) scheme at Setia Business Park II, here today.
The 5,490 affordable housing units comprise 621 units under Johor Community Housing (PKK) (A); 1,444 units of PKJ (B) and another 3,425 units are under RMMJ. Also present were State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Md Jais Sarday, Tebrau State Assemblyman Datuk Maulizan Bujang and SP Setia Berhad chairman Tan Sri Dr Wan Mohd Zahid Mohd Noordin.
Earlier, in his speech, Mohamed Khaled urged the Opposition to judge the state government’s seriousness in providing affordable housing fairly rather than finding faults and shortcomings “I will not be apologetic or over defensive not to admit the weaknesses in our housing agenda. I do not claim that it is perfect and does not require improvement.” The mentri besar said the unfounded allegations thrown by the Opposition on the housing agenda in Johor showed their irresponsible attitude and should be halted.
“It shows that they do not keep up with the developments in Johor, let alone to appreciate all our efforts to provide affordable housing for the people of Johor. Such baseless criticisms in the media aim to influence public perceptions and intend to run down the state government, the housing developers and all the parties involved,” he added.
At the event, SP Setia Berhad as the developer of RMMJ, handed over 300 keys to affordable housing units to lucky owners through a draw. The affordable housing units are in the form of double storey terrace houses measuring 18×60 sq ft worth between RM150,000 and RM206,000 each. — Bernama
