KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 – The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) today called on the government to consider increasing the allocations for public universities in Budget 2018. Its deputy president, Mohd Shaman Jaes said the move was important to safeguard the future and reputation of the nation’s public universities.
“The higher education sector needs to be given priority, as it serves to provide skilled manpower, thus helping to shape the future of the nation. These universities need a lot of funding to cover costs to provide study equipment, training of staff and lecturers, and to fund lecturers in getting their PhDs,” he told a news conference, here.
He expressed concern that lack of funds could affect the quality of research conducted, and hence the reputation and ranking of the universities concerned. Public universities received an allocation of RM7.8 billion in Budget 2017, down from RM8.2 billion in the previous year. — Bernama
