GEORGE TOWN, Aug 23 – A scuffle broke out between residents, representatives from a developer and Department Of Director General Of Lands And Mines (JKPTG) department to demolish the 35-houses at Jalan Kampung Kastam here this morning.
Police were forced to intervene and gave both sides a month to sort things out at the 7.2ha site meant for an affordable housing project under the 1Malaysia People’s Housing (PR1MA) Plan to build 320 units. It was believed that the residents were against the demolition exercise, although they had been given a two week notice earlier.
About 100 people gathered at Jalan Kampung Kastam this afternoon to protest the demolition exercise conducted by the department. At the time of writing, JKPTG proceeded with the scheduled demolition exercise. Most of the residents were either former Customs department employees or their family members. Also president in the standoff was Makkal Sakti president Datuk RS Thanenthiran. — PN
