GEORGE TOWN, Aug 25 – Former Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) president Maimunah Mohd Sharif has been question by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office here on the late afternoon today over an illegal carbon filter factory in Bukit Mertajam.
Maimunah, 55, who has been mayor of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) since July 1, arrived at the state MACC headquarters at 5.30pm. She served as president of MPSP during the time an illegal carbon factory in Sungai Lembu near Bukit Mertajam was operating. She was MPSP president from March 2011 till June this year.
Phee, who is Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman, arrived at the MACC office in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah here at 9.45am. His daughter and his counsel, Ramkarpal Singh, accompanied him; they left the premises at about 6.15pm. On Aug 11, Phee, 66, was questioned by MACC for allegedly using his office or position for gratification under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
He was arrested by MACC over letters he wrote to Seberang Prai Municipal Council urging it not to take action against the factory. Factory owner Edmond Gan Eu Lee, 37, and his father Gan Buck Hee, 70, were also arrested at the same time. All three were released on Aug 14 after the Penang High Court set aside their remand orders. The MACC, however, intends to appeal the decision. — PN
